PARKERSBURG - Haleigh Hempen scored a game-high 22 points and Class 2A No. 3-ranked Aplington-Parkersburg pasted 1A No. 6 Grundy Center, 72-37, in Thursday's cross-NICL girls' basketball contest.
Bailie Schipper and Amanda Dunn both pitched in 11 points and Laura Toben added 10 for the Falcons, who improved to 9-0 with the win. A-P led 21-16 after the first quarter and pulled away with a 16-6 second-quarter edge.
Grundy Center (3-1) was led by Riley Ackerman and Sam Meyers with seven points apiece. Sydnie Gutosky and Katie Lindeman both contributed six points.
Cox carries A-P boys past Spartans
PARKERSBURG - Dakota Cox notched a career-high 29 points and Aplington-Parkersburg took down Grundy Center, 74-38, in non-conference boys' basketball action Thursday night.
Alex Johnson added nine points and Brady Frey had eight for the Falcons (2-2), who outscored the Spartans 22-9 in the second quarter to take a 35-21 halftime lead.
Ryon Appel led Grundy Center (0-3) with 13 points, Riley Wells had eight and Dylan Lyman seven.
EM/GMG splits in home quadrangular
LE GRAND - Class 1A No. 6-ranked Don Bosco posted a 2-0 record at Thursday's quadrangular wrestling meet hosted by East Marshall/GMG.
The host Mustangs (2-2, 2-1) fell to the Dons, 54-21, but defeated Jesup by the same score.
Posting 2-0 records for EM/GMG were Zach Underhill, Jay Reisetter, Brock Pieters and Nate Judge. Underhill and 2A No. 7 Reisetter had two pins, Pieters added another and Judge's only mat win came by fall.
The Mustangs go to the Oskaloosa Duals on Saturday.
