SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat frosh boys back in ‘W’ column

The Marshalltown freshman boys' basketball team got back on the winning track with a 49-33 victory over Fort Dodge on Friday.

The Bobcats (4-1, 1-0) won their Central Iowa Conference Northern Division opener behind 11 points from Aaron Hauser and 10 from Drake Slifer. Michael Chavez chipped in eight points, Tony Smith had seven and Sam Rogers six for Marshalltown.

Next up for MHS is Monday's road game at Newton.

Dodgers edge MHS sophomore boys

Fort Dodge foiled Marshalltown's conference opener as the Dodgers won Friday's sophomore boys' basketball game 62-61 over MHS.

Jordan Smith led the host Bobcats with 16 points, Austin Lovin added 12 points and Grant Thimesch had 10.

Marshalltown (1-3, 0-1) is back on the court Monday at Newton.

MHS JV girls take care of Fort Dodge

The Marshalltown junior varsity girls' basketball team pulled away from Fort Dodge for a 53-32 triumph at the Roundhouse in CIC Northern Division play Friday.

Kali Banks paced the Bobcats (4-2, 1-0) with 14 points, while Molly Major pitched in with nine. Jordyn Simbedes tallied seven points while Lexi Vaughn and Autumn Gardner both added four.

The Bobcats hit the road Monday to face Newton.

Freshman Bobcats double up Dodgers

Rachel Whaley and Tabby Steffensen both scored nine points to lead the Marshalltown freshman girls' basketball team past Fort Dodge, 40-19, on Friday night.

Ruth Boland added five points for the Bobcats (5-1, 1-0), who play at Newton on Monday.

West Marshall matmen go 2-1 at home

STATE CENTER - The West Marshall wrestling team went 2-1 in its home quadrangular meet Thursday night.

The Trojans' only loss came against Class 2A No. 5 Union of La Porte City, 44-24. West Marshall defeated Wapsie Valley (56-24) and Aplington-Parkersburg (45-36).

Three West Marshall wrestlers posted 3-0 records on the night, highlighted by Devin Chesler recording three pins at 160 pounds. Class 1A No. 2-ranked Kyle Blocker had two pins and a technical fall between 138 and 145 pounds, while No. 9-ranked Tanner Arnold had a pin and two decisions at 152.

Ninth-ranked Dale Hilleman (170) was 2-1 with a pair of pins, while Cole Needham also went 2-1 at 120 with a pin and a decision.

Traer 8th-grader on Team Iowa football

WHARTON, N.J. - Noah Kaufmann of Traer is a member of the Team Iowa eighth-grade football squad that is playing today in Smithville, Mo., in the third round of the FBU National Championship tournament.

The 5-foot-9, 205-pound Kaufmann is one of 34 players on Team Iowa, which last weekend defeated Team Wisconsin 44-6 and Team Minnesota 40-18 in the Upper Midwest Region tournament at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines.

The FBU National Championship features 64 teams and will showcase more than 250 games through a four-week period across the country.

Team Iowa faces a team from San Antonio, Texas, today, and, with a win, on Sunday will meet either St. Louis or Southwest Louisiana. Teams reaching the Final Four will advance to the Alamodome in San Antonio, with the champion being crowned following the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 6, 2013.
