WATERLOO - The Marshalltown wrestling team turned around its 0-3 start to the Battle of Waterloo with a 3-0 finish, scoring 29th place in the 32-team event with a trio of decisive dual meet victories Saturday inside Young Arena.
The Bobcats bested Iowa City High (48-33), Waterloo East (63-12) and OA-BCIG (60-24) to finish as high as they could after Friday's rough start.
Eight Marshalltown wrestlers went without a loss for the day, highlighted by seven performers who posted 3-0 marks.
Zach Slocum, a senior 138-pounder, scored the most impressively perfect day among them. He collected three pins in a total time of 4 minutes, 18 seconds.
Sixth-ranked heavyweight Pedro Gomez and 145-pounder Ben Rebik both went 3-0 with two pins and a forfeit, while Josh Edel (152), Peyton Williams (160) and Justus Bjelland (195) each had a pin to go with two forfeits. Derek Mann (170) won his only wrestled match by technical fall.
Ryan McDaniel (120) posted a 2-0 day, winning once by fall while receiving a forfeit.
Matt Vandegrift (220) won twice by fall - both in the first period - with his lone loss coming against Iowa City High's second-ranked Ryan Maas.
The Bobcats have two matches remaining before the holiday break, starting with Monday's home CIC North Division dual against Fort Dodge at the Roundhouse. West Des Moines Valley entertains the 'Cats on Thursday night.
