Man charged with vehicular homicide to plead guilty

A man charged with vehicular homicide late last year will plead guilty Friday.

Shiro Remeliik, 21, of Marshalltown, tested over the legal blood-alcohol limit in December 2011 following a fatal car crash that killed his 21-year-old passenger, Gabriel Speas, also of Marshalltown.

Speas was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash where Remeliik's car collided with a tree on the 700 block of Summit Street.

Remeliik will plead guilty to vehicular homicide, a Class B felony, 1:30 p.m. on the fifth floor of the Marshall County Courthouse. Because the charge is a forcible felony mandating imprisonment, Judge James Ellefson will likely sentence Remeliik following his plea.

Local man to plead guilty to seven felonies

A man charged with a slew of burglary related charges will plead guilty to seven felonies Friday.

Police initially arrested John Vivian Sims Jr., 33, of Marshalltown, Oct. 6 after DNA evidence tied him to a burglary on Harmony Drive in July.

The Marshalltown Police Department charged Sims with three counts of third-degree burglary, Class D felonies, three counts of second-degree burglary, Class C felonies, possession of burglary tools, an aggravated misdemeanor, second-degree theft, a Class D felony, fifth-degree theft, a simple misdemeanor, and ongoing criminal conduct, a Class B felony.

Sims will plead guilty to three counts of second-degree burglary, three counts of third-degree burglary and second-degree theft 2:30 p.m. on the fifth floor of the Marshall County Courthouse.

Incidents

On Tuesday, Shirley Smith, 104 E. Ingledue St., reported the theft of a Casio keyboard from her residence. Estimated value of loss was $100.

On Monday, an employee with Home Federal Savings, 303 W. Main St., reported damage to an ATM machine at 3700 S. Center St., and the theft of cash. Estimated value of loss was $29,000.

On Monday, Bethany Leigh Freland, 407 May St., reported the theft of a HP Pavilion laptop computer from her residence. Estimated value of loss was $598.

On Monday, Karen Weltzin, 15 S. 1st St., reported damage to a glove compartment in a Nissan Altima while parked in the alleyway in the 10 block of South First Street and the theft of eight CDs. Estimated value of loss was $170.

On Monday, Jessica Paz, 1607 S. 5th St., reported the theft of a Tom Tom XXL GPS unit from a 2005 Nissan Altima while parked at her residence. Estimated value of loss was $400.

On Monday, William Mark Krough, 105 N. Center St. Apt. #4, was cited for driving while barred.

Accidents

On Tuesday, a pickup driven by Phyllis Jean Kroener, 3202 S. 12th St. Lot #188, was northbound on Fourth Avenue when it left the traveled portion of the roadway, drove up into a yard and collided into a car parked in the driveway. No injuries were reported. Kroener was cited for leaving the scene of an accident-damage to vehicle only, reckless driving and driving under suspension. Damage to the Kroener pickup was estimated at $1,000 while the legally parked car received an estimated $1,500 in damage.

On Dec. 13, an officer responded to JB Bar, 915 Turner St., on a report of a fight. Upon arrival two vehicles left the scene, people dispersed and the officer found Derrick Garth sitting on the curb on the south side of the roadway with the complaint that his foot had been run over. Medical attention was not sought at that time. After seeking medical attention, Garth reported to the officer that a vehicle driven by Laprincess Sheneka Buckner, 314 Washington St., had struck him while leaving the JB Bar area. Insurance information was exchanged.

Wednesday

Phyllis Kroener, 3333 150th St., made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge, a leaving the scene of an accident-property only charge and a reckless driving charge. She pleaded guilty to all charges. On the driving under suspension charge the fine was $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, due immediately. The fine on the reckless driving charge and the leaving the scene charge were $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75 for each charge, due immediately. The court allowed for $50 in monthly installment payments beginning Jan. 17 until the debt is paid.

Michael Joseph Curley, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a violation of pre-trial release charge. The public defender's office which has already been appointed will continue representation. Curley has an arraignment hearing scheduled for 1 p.m. on Dec. 20. Bond is set at $1,000 cash or surety.

Wol Reec Wol, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a state application for probation revocation. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his case. The probation revocation hearing is set for 2 p.m. on Jan. 2. Bond is set at $2,000 cash or surety.

A male juvenile from Marshalltown made an initial appearance on a failure to stop within a safe, clear distance charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due immediately. The court allowed for monthly installment payments of $50 beginning Jan. 17 until the debt is paid.

Ricardo Amaya, 411 N. 12th Ave., made an initial appearance on a forgery charge and a preventing apprehension by providing false identification charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his cases. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Jan. 7. Amaya was released on his own recognizance.

Adam Scott Leiva, 108 1/2 S. 3rd St., made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, due immediately. The court allowed for monthly installment payments of $50 beginning Jan. 17 until the debt is paid or in lieu of the fine and surcharge he may do 46 hours of community service plus pay the court costs to be completed by June 30.

On Monday, Matthew Dean Barber, 401 Dennis Dr., was arrested for burglary-second degree and violation of a no-contact order.

On Monday, Kathy Lou Allenstein, of State Center, was arrested for possession of prescription drugs without a prescription, operating while intoxicated and improper brake light.

On Sunday, Jasen William Burton, of Grinnell, was arrested for trespass, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance-meth and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Dec. 15, Keith Alan Ray, of Boone, was arrested for failure to appear and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

On Dec. 13, Kirk Noel Banzhaf, 134 E. Main St. Apt. #708, was arrested for vandalism.

On Dec. 12, Melissa Rose Harris, of Eldora, was arrested for probation violation.

Accidents

On Sunday, a car driven by Kayla Sue Danielson, 2953 204th St., was northbound on Vance Avenue, had stopped at the top of a hill and started to turn onto 204th Street when a vehicle driven by Austin Case Grimes, 312 E. Ferner St., crested the hill and collided with the rear of the Danielson car. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Danielson car was estimated at $1,500 while the Grimes vehicle received an estimated $700 in damage.

On Dec. 14, a pickup driven by Gina Marie Frost, of Albion, was southbound on Marsh Avenue when it struck a deer that entered the traveled portion of the roadway. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Frost pickup was estimated at $1,600.

On Dec. 13, a pickup driven by Chris Roy Hagedorn, of Newton, was westbound on Highway 30 when it struck a deer that entered the roadway causing front end and left front damage. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Hagedorn pickup was estimated at $5,500.
