Police are searching for a suspect who broke into an ATM Dec. 9 and stole $20,000.

Officials at the Home Federal Savings Bank, 303 W. Main St., reported $9,000 in damage to the machine Monday, said Capt. Chris Jones, with the Marshalltown Police Department.

The ATM broken into was in an off-site kiosk located at Marshalltown Community College. The machine is an open kiosk not a vestibule that requires a bank card to access.

Jones said bank employees noticed the theft during a routine check of the bank's machines.

Bank officials were unable to comment on the incident. Jones would not release any further details for the sake of the investigation, including how the suspect gained access to the ATM.

According to the police report, the culprit was somehow able to gain access to the machine and abscond with the cash inside.

The Marshalltown Police Department will continue to investigate the theft. Anyone with any information about this incident should contact Capt. Chris Jones at 641-754-5730.
