AMES - The Cyclones got two big performances from its two best players Sunday and easily won the Cyclone Challenge with an 86-47 pounding of Alabama State at Hilton Coliseum.
Hallie Christofferson finished with 21 points and nine boards, while Chelsea Poppens added 20 points and seven boards in the victory and the Cyclones canned 34-of-39 from the foul line in an easy win.
Iowa State won the two victories in the Challenge - victories over Alabama State and Air Force - by an average of 43.5 points. And ISU coach Bill Fennelly improved to 43-0 in home nonconference tournament games.
Christofferson made 7-of-10 from the floor, while Poppens was 8-of-9.
Christofferson made her first six shots of the game, including four triples, and Iowa State claimed a 51-16 lead at the break.
Poppens made her first seven shots and claimed the 13th 20-point game of her career.
Fennelly pulled his starters with 14 minutes to play in the game as the Cyclone lead ballooned to 47 points.
It also was another solid performance from the defense, who has held their opponents to 50 points or less in all but two games this season.
The Cyclones also held Alabama State to just 27 percent shooting from the field.
The Cyclones (9-1) start Big 12 Conference play Wednesday when they host No. 20 Texas in Hilton Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
