TOLEDO - Durwood D. Davis, DVM, 77, of Toledo, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at Marshalltown Medical Center. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 900 Park St, Tama, with Pastor Bobby Shomo and Pastor Greg Boyle of Grace Community Church in Toledo officiating. Interment will be held at a future date. A Memorial Visitation will be held Friday, January 4, 2013 from 4-8 PM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama.
Durwood was born on September 4, 1935, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Harold John and Mae (West) Davis.
He graduated from Tama High School and received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine with honors from Iowa State University in 1959. He practiced for fifty-three years. He married Melody Tjossem on May 26, 1967. Doc was a member of and served as President of the Eastern Iowa Veterinary Association, and was a member of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association for forty consecutive years. He was a member of Grace Community Church in Toledo and formerly a long time member of Living Faith United Methodist Church in Tama. Doc was one of the original members of the Tama-Toledo Jaycees. He was a former member of the South Tama County School Board and in his younger years was an Eagle Scout.
Doc loved his veterinary practice so much, that he always said he never worked a day in his life. In his spare time, he enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada, time with grandkids, and his farm.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and his sister, Betty (Ron) Schmidt.
Survivors include his wife of forty-five years, Melody of Toledo; one son, Brad (Bonnie) Davis of Alburnett; two daughters, LeAnn (JB) Smith of Hudson, and Lana (Heath) Kellogg of Newton; nine grandchildren, Danielle Smith, Nathan Smith, Erika Smith, Chad Smith, Jeremy Smith, Bailey Kellogg, Cody Kellogg, Cael Kellogg, and Brooke Davis.
A memorial fund has been established.
