Tim Strand, 64, of San Jose, Calif., formerly of Laurel and Grinnell, died on Dec. 29, 2012, at the age of 64, at his home in San Jose, Calif. Although he was a non-smoker, his death was the result of lung cancer. Lung cancer kills more than any other form of cancer and during his treatment, he participated in a clinical trial working towards better treatment and a possible cure of lung cancer.
Tim was born on April 17, 1948, in Marshalltown. He graduated from Grinnell High School, valedictorian of his class, in 1966. He received a Bachelor of Arts in physics degree in 1970 at the University of Iowa. Timothy received a PhD in applied physics in 1976 at the University of California at San Diego. Through his schooling and work, he traveled extensively and made long-lasting friendships from many countries.
Survivors include his wife Sue (Malfeld) Strand; son Matthew and his much loved and chosen granddaughter Kassandra Le. Also his mother Olive Strand, of Grinnell; sister Sharon (Earl) Lewis, of Urbandale; brothers Neil, of Marshalltown, and Kurt (Rene), of Grinnell; sisters in-law: Jan, Lynn and Diane; brother-in-law Gary, and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his father Glen Strand and father- and mother- in-law Don and Ann Malfeld.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on April 13, 2013, at the Sealand Park Social Center in Grinnell.
