Trojan boys continue to chase fifth straight title

STATE CENTER - Four-time defending NICL West Division champion West Marshall made it to the halfway point of this season's league schedule unbeaten, beating back South Hardin 63-41 in Friday's boys' basketball contest.

Duncan Ferch had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Trojans (8-2, 7-0), who jumped out to a 16-2 lead after the first quarter. Reggie Gradwell had a career-high 16 points, while Matt Van Metre added seven points and seven rebounds.

Eric Mulder scored a team-leading 16 points for South Hardin (5-5, 3-4). Sam Shindelar added eight points and Glendan Mesch had six.

West Marshall plays tonight at Gilbert. In Tuesday's NICL West play, West Marshall hosts East Marshall and South Hardin goes to Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck 65, East Marshall 35

LE GRAND - Gladbrook-Reinbeck rallied after a slow start and turned away East Marshall, 65-35, in Friday's NICL West clash.

The Rebels (6-1, 6-1) were led by Chase Clark's season-high 18 points. Jacob Smoldt contributed 13 points, Camden Kickbush had 12 and Zach Pierce eight.

Ben Terrones led East Marshall (1-7, 1-6) with 13 points. Walker Steward had eight points, and both Mitch Berry and Josh Wilson added six points. Wilson led the Mustangs with six rebounds.

East Marshall hosts Colo-NESCO today in non-conference play.

Grundy Center 48, BCLUW 37

GRUNDY CENTER - The host Spartans broke open a close game late to capture their first win of the season, a 48-37 Grundy Center victory over BCLUW in Friday's NICL West contest.

Ryon Appel scored 12 points to lead Grundy Center (1-9, 1-6), while Elliot Eggleston and and Dylan Lyman had 10 points apiece. Brady Hook tallied seven points and a team-leading 14 rebounds, while Eggleston had five assists.

Conner Ubben scored a game-high 20 points to pace BCLUW (2-6, 1-6). Cole Silver had six points.

Grundy Center goes to Cedar Falls on Monday for a 6 p.m. make-up game against Valley Lutheran. On Tuesday, the Spartans host South Tama while BCLUW goes to AGWSR.

North Tama 78, Clarksville 26

CLARKSVILLE - Mitchell Boerm scored a career-high 30 points and Skyler Kvidera added a career-high 17 as the Class 1A No. 6-ranked North Tama boys' basketball team battered Clarksville, 78-26, in Iowa Star Conference action.

The Redhawks (10-0, 8-0) led 28-5 after the first quarter and 43-12 at the half. Dalton Hulme tallied seven assists while Jacob Wrage had six steals. Nolan Hefty pitched in with eight points.

Weston Gray had 12 points to pace Clarksville (1-9, 1-7).

North Tama plays today at Jesup.

Tripoli 68, GMG 62

TRIPOLI - Austin Newbrough and Nick Shinstine scored 23 points apiece to lead Tripoli to a 68-62 victory over GMG in Iowa Star play.

The host Panthers (6-2, 6-2) led from wire-to-wire but never shook GMG. The Wolverines (4-5, 4-3) were led by Blake Warren with 17 points and eight rebounds. Luke Petty had 15 points, and Austin Vaughn had 11 points and six boards.

GMG is back at home Tuesday against Dunkerton.
