COLO - One spot behind in the rankings, one win ahead in the chase for the Iowa Star Conference's South Division title.
The Colo-NESCO girls' basketball team took the lead in the league standings with Monday's 62-29 rout of Northeast Hamilton, a make-up game from December's one big snowstorm.
The Class 1A No. 14-ranked Royals (11-2, 8-1) won their fifth straight and inched in front of No. 13 Meskwaki (10-1, 7-1) in the Iowa Star South. Monday's outcome was never in doubt as Colo-NESCO jumped out to a 17-5 lead after the first quarter and pushed the lead to 37-13 by halftime.
Junior center Caitlyn Riese charted team-highs of 19 points and seven rebounds to lead the Royals. Shayla Dean had eight points, a season-high 10 steals, six assists and five rebounds, while Shelby Anthony and Haley Stoeffler also had eight points and Madison Farren added seven.
Northeast Hamilton was led by Jenn Jeffers, Sarah Elm and Molly Greenfield with six points apiece. The Trojets (2-8, 1-7) made more 3-pointers (six) than 2-point field goals (five) in their fourth consecutive loss.
Colo-NESCO's 62 points is the most allowed by Northeast Hamilton so far this season, and three points shy of the Royals' high game.
The homestand continues tonight for Colo-NESCO as CAL comes to town, and Dunkerton visits on Friday.
