Sgt. Melinda Ruopp of the Marshalltown Police Department, center with K-9 AWOL, is shown answering a question from Tom La Ville of Marshalltown, left and back to camera, at the public library Wednesday afternoon. Joining Ruopp was MPD officer Eric Siemens, right center, while two residents look on. Ruopp and Siemens were at the library to meet and greet residents as part of a MPD fundraising initiative to purchase another K-9. A second K-9 is required to assist MPD with law enforcement and public safety issues. AWOL, a six-year old German Shepherd, is the MPD’s only K-9, but is nearing retirement due to degenerative muscle disease. Staff of the library later presented the officers a $136 check for the cause collected from library patrons.
