COUNCIL BLUFFS - The sixth-ranked Iowa Western men's basketball team dominated the glass and got off to a hot start against Marshalltown Community College on Wednesday night, and the Tigers never got going in a 79-66 loss.
The Reivers out-rebounded MCC (15-5, 0-3) by 20 in the game and Tavian Pomlee and Devin Brooks combined to score 49 points in the Reiver victory.
"We knew we had to rebound well tonight to give ourselves a chance, and getting out-rebounded by 20 is tough to overcome," MCC coach Brynjar Brynjarsson said. "We gave up some early buckets in transition and those two things were really the difference in the game."
Troidell Carter had 24 points and eight rebounds to lead the Tigers, but MCC's two leading scorers - Chris Caird and Matej Delinac - combined to shoot 3-for-22 from the floor. Delinac finished with 10 points and three boards, while Caird had just three points.
Cameron Robinson had 15 points and Jamal Gataly added eight points and 12 boards in the loss.
Iowa Western improved to 21-1 on the season and 2-1 in ICCAC play. Dinjiyl Walker also finished with 12 points for the Reivers.
"It's a tough place to play, and we'll need to regroup and get back to the drawing board to get ready for Indian Hills," Brynjarsson said.
MCC hosts No. 8 Indian Hills at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Student Activity Center.
