FORT DODGE - The Marshalltown girls' basketball team kept chipping away, and finally Fort Dodge broke.
The Bobcats ended a six-game losing streak by securing a Central Iowa Conference Northern Division sweep of Fort Dodge, pulling away from the Dodgers for a 49-40 victory Friday.
The Marshalltown offense found success outside behind the Hughes sisters, and inside as a result of Fort Dodge's mounting foul trouble. Amanda Hughes knocked down three 3-pointers, Sam Hughes had two more, and the Hughes girls led the Bobcats (4-14, 2-2) out of the loss column with 12 points apiece.
MHS got to the free-throw line 20 times as well, making 12 attempts while purposely putting the ball in the post to force an aggressive Dodger interior to play defense. Ashley Altman and Lexi Astor both eventually fouled out.
Eisha Oden added seven points, 12 rebounds and eight steals for the 'Cats, who led at every intermission and finally pulled away with a 17-6 fourth-quarter advantage.
"We knew their big girl in there was going to play hard, and we wanted to put pressure on her early on," said MHS head coach Tim Johnson. "Finally we got her in deep foul trouble, and once that happened we were able to go to the foul line and get in the bonus.
