NORFOLK, Neb. - Chris Caird scored a game-high 31 points and the Marshalltown Community College men's basketball team picked up its first ICCAC Division I victory Wednesday night, prevailing 89-62 over league newcomer Northeast CC.
The sophomore Caird scored 33 against these same Hawks (14-10, 1-4) during their first meet Jan. 12 in Marshalltown - a 108-101 overtime win for Northeast.
But the Tigers took out the top counterpart in the second meeting, holding Northeast's leading scorer KJ Bluford to just three points. Bluford averages 19 points per game and scored 31 in the Hawks' extra-period win in Marshalltown two and a half weeks earlier.
"The guys really followed the gameplan and we held him to three points," said MCC coach Brynjar Brynjarsson. "Jamal (Gatali) and Jamyles (Coleman) took their turn guarding him and did a good job of limiting his chances."
Brynjarsson also credited a 59-43 rebounding advantage and a 20-to-14 assist-to-turnover ratio as statistics key to the victory.
Matej Delinac had 12 points, Troidell Carter had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Cameron Robinson had 12 points, eight rebounds five assists and only one turnover for the Tigers (16-7, 1-4). Gatali and Coleman both contributed eight rebounds and Caird had seven, while Rahiem Holloway had four assists as MCC ended a three-game skid.
"The guys played hard, they shared the ball, and they found the hot hand with Chris," Brynjarsson added, "but everybody chipped in somewhere."
Khapri Alston led Northeast with 16 points, Sean Scott had 11 and Kyle Kilgore 10. The Hawks have lost five of their last six.
MCC hosts Southeastern (19-6, 2-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday night at the Student Activity Center. The Blackhawks won their first meeting with MCC as well, 73-69, in West Burlington.
