No stop sign means gas, time savings

February 7, 2013
Janice Godfrey, Marshalltown , Times-Republican

To the Marshalltown City Council: Good job in not placing a stop sign at Sixth and Merle Hibbs Boulevard. Each car stopped consumes 4 ounces of gas times 8,000 cars per day times 30 days a month equalling 7,500 gallons of gas wasted per month.

You've saved the public more than $25,000 monthly in fuel costs, plus the enormous amount of time wasted in stopping and getting back up to 35 mph going up the hills. Figuring one minute per car to stop and go equals 4,000 hours of time monthly that would have been wasted if a stop sign had been installed.
