Prins tops 1,000 points in Cyclone win

AUSTIN, Tex. - Anna Prins made sure her milestone night is one worth remembering.

Prins scored a season-high 19 points to eclipse the career 1,000 point barrier as the 25th-ranked Iowa State women's basketball team trumped Texas 67-48 at the Frank Erwin Center Wednesday.

Iowa State (16-5, 7-4) led by as many as 18 on a Prins trey early in the second half, before the Longhorns closed the deficit to 51-44 with 7:12 to play.

Nikki Moody (15 points) and Brynn Williamson (12 points) hit back-to-back 3-pointers as the Cyclones outscored Texas 16-4 down the final stretch.

Williamson also limited the Longhorns' leading scorer, Chassidy Fussell to 10 points on 4-for-12 shooting.

"We could not have played better defensively," Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly said. "

"Brynn chased Fussell all over the building. They run a play for her almost every time down the floor. Our guards played together as well as they have all year."

Fussell entered the game averaging 15.1 points per contest but finished 0-of-6 from behind the arc.

"(Fussell) is one of those players who, if you relax for just one second, she will burn you,"?Williamson said.

Prins became the 24th Cyclone to surpass the 1,000 point mark when she made a triple with 14:13 to play in the first half. Iowa State made 7-of-13 3-pointers in the opening stanza and allowed Texas to make just 1-of-11. ISU closed the half on a 14-0 run to lead 39-24 at the break.

"Anna had some big threes for us and joins a list of great players and a list of great people at 1,000 points," Fennelly said.

Prins shot 7-for-10 from the field and 3-of-5 from deep, while Williamson made 4-of-6 treys and had seven rebounds.

ISU?senior Chelsea Poppens added 10 points and six boards.

Moody had seven assists and four steals in the Cyclone win.

Empress Davenport led the Longhorns (9-12, 2-8) with 13 points, while Celina Rodrigo added 10.

The Cyclones outrebounded the Big 12's best team on the glass 32-31, while limiting Texas to shoot just 37 percent (20-for-54) from the field.

The Longhorns came into the game ranked eighth in Division I with a plus-10.9 rebounds per game margin.

"We out-rebounded the top rebounding team in the league,"?Fennelly said. "It was a great team effort."

Iowa State is tied for third in the Big 12 standings with Texas Tech - whom they've already swept this season - and hosts Kansas State Saturday at 1 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
