Buford Frances “Red” Johnston, 90

Buford Frances "Red" Johnston, 90, of Mt. View, Ark., formerly of Laurel, died Jan. 31, 2013 at his home. His memorial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Sat., Feb. 16, 2013, at the Laurel United Methodist Church with Pastor Marvin Seims officiating. There will be no visitation. Buford will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown.

Born Buford Frances Johnston on June 13, 1922, in Marshalltown. He was the son of John Joseph and Mabel Margaret (Karns) Johnston. He attended school in the Laurel area. Buford worked on the family farm and at Fisher Governor Company until his enlistment in the United States Navy on Sept. 16, 1942. He was an Aviation Radioman, 3rd Class-V6 during World War II and served his country being honorably discharged on Dec. 6, 1945.

Buford married Alice Mae Church Johnston on May 5, 1943, and to this union was born two sons and a daughter. Buford worked for Fisher Controls Company 42 years along with farming the family farm in Laurel. He and his wife, Alice, retired in 1986 and then moved to Mt. View, Ark.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: daughter, Susan Sietmann, of Marshalltown; sons: Dennis (Connie) Johnston, of Marshalltown, and Daniel Friedle, of Salt lake City, Utah; daughter-in- law, Jeanice Johnston, of Marshalltown; his grandchildren: Becky Clapsaddle, of Marshalltown, Kendra (David) Lunney, of Wisconsin, Kati (James) Andresen, of Marshalltown, Melinda (Billy) Roper, of Texas, Carolyn Johnston, of Florida; John Borsch, of Marshalltown, Denise (Bradley) Smoldt, of Gladbrook, Jason Johnston, of LeGrand, Barry (Sonya) Johnston, of Texas, and Stacy Fowler, of Nevada, Nicole (Noel) and Alison Einerson, of Utah; his 21 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Mary Johnston and Peg Johnston, both of Marshalltown, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years; his parents; his brothers: William Palmer and John Johnston Jr.; his son, David Paul Johnston and his faithful companions, Charlie and Pepper. Memorials may be directed to the family. c/o P.O. Box 56 Laurel, Iowa, 50141.
