Former Iowa House Speaker Rep. Pat Murphy, D-Dubuque, has officially announced his candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 1st District, which includes Marshalltown.

Murphy will run for the seat currently held by Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, who recently announced he will run for U.S. Senate in 2014.

Murphy, 53, is in his 24th year in the Iowa House and was speaker from 2007 to 2011.

Rep. Pat Murphy, D-Dubuque, has announced his candidacy for the U.S. House and will run in the 1st Congressional District which includes Marshalltown.

"I bring lots of experience," Murphy said. "It's a natural step for me."

Murphy said the biggest issue facing the people of the 1st District is the economy and he said the middle class is in need of a boost.

"Middle class salaries have been frozen for the past decade," Murphy said.

He also said Social Security and Medicare have been under attack and he said they need to be fixed for the long term so seniors can live in dignity in their later years.

Murphy wants to follow up previous work done by Braley in the district.

"I want to make sure that the 1st district remains strong," Murphy said.

If elected as a member of Congress, Murphy would work to get things done, he said. Often partisan politics can lead to gridlock in Washington.

"I do have the ability to work across party lines and I will continue to do that," Murphy said.

One of his campaign focuses in the near future will be on fundraising, he said.

Murphy visited Marshalltown last week and said it is an important area of his campaign since it was of the four main population hubs in the 1st District.

The election for the congressional seat will be held in 2014.
