Assisting Minister Jolene Jebsen of Marshalltown’s Trinity Lutheran Church, far left, is shown preparing to mark parishioner Dean Vaughn’s forehead with ashes at a noon Ash Wednesday service. Christian churches throughout central Iowa held noon or evening services to mark the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season. Lent is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares one for Christ’s resurrection at Easter. In some churches, ashes are from burned palm branches used from the previous year’s Palm Sunday service.
