A newly-formed discussion group started by Marshall County Democrats will hold its first meeting Saturday morning.
The Democratic Issues Group will meet at 8:30 a.m. at Legends American Grill, 2902 S. Center St. in Marshalltown. The first meeting will include a discussion on the education reform package proposed in the state.
Tom Swartz, the organizer of the group, said there was a consensus among local Democrats to learn more about issues affecting the state.
"There was a hunger to delve into issues more to educate ourselves and be better prepared to advocate our position," Swartz said.
The group will gather in the meeting room at Legends and Swartz expects a small crowd to start but hopes to build the group in the future as more people learn about it.
The group will meet the third Saturday of each month at Legends. Swartz said the meetings are open to the public and those who attend don't have to be Democrat. He did say they would prefer the discussion to deal with sharing ideas and not be confrontational.
There are hopes to not only inform local Democrats about the issues but also strengthen the party as well, Swartz said. They also plan to draw political candidates and elected officials to the meetings when their schedules allow.
