FAMILY LIFE

Family: Spouse is Amanda Sawtelle. We have a son Nolan. My parents are Jim and Deb Sawtelle of Marshalltown.

Pet: Zara, a 15" beagle.

Hobbies and interests: I enjoy watching football, movies, spending time with my family, listening to music, playing music and writing.

WORK

Occupation: Machine operator at Interface Sealing Solutions in Marshalltown and author of two published books: "The Homecoming Blackout" and "The Tragedy of a Friday Night in April." Visit kamwritesbooks.com to learn more. Also employed at Taylor's Maid Rite in Marshalltown.

What that means: After working second shift at ISS, I will, when inspired, sometimes write from 2 to 4 a.m. Despite holding two jobs, family and writing are priorities.

Years doing job: I have been employed at ISS seven years and Taylor's Maid Rite four years. I have been an author four years.

Best part of the job: I enjoy writing because it gives me an outlet and is therapy. After a long night at work, I can lose myself in writing. I plan on writing and releasing books until the day I die, and it is all because of the support that I have received from friends and family. Regarding support, I was grateful for the large turnout and encouragement received at a Jan. 19 book signing for "Tragedy" held at Marshalltown's Fiddle & Whistle Pub. I have no formal training in literature or writing, but wrote several short stories as a teen. I abandoned writing to pursue a musical career, and played in several bands before returning to writing.

FAVORITES

Book: "1984" by George Orwell

Movies: "American History X," "The Exorcist," Fight Club, "The Godfather," "Halloween," "SLC" "Punk," "Rocky," "Empire Records," "Dazed and Confused," "Boondock Saints"

Foods: Anything my wife cooks. Chicken Parmesan and meatloaf are two personal favorites.

Sports: The Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball and the Blackhawks of the National Hockey League. The Miami Dolphins of the National Football League.

COMMUNITY

Best part of living in town or area where one resides: I have lived in Marshalltown my entire life and I have developed many great personal and professional relationships. The people are so true and accessible.

Most influential persons: My son, my wife, my parents, my friends (who are more like family) and The Beatles.

Advice on life: Always be "the you" that you want to be. Never change for anyone unless it is to better yourself. Be proud of who you are and show yourself every minute of every day.
