Police charge local woman with stealing from Hy-Vee

A local woman was cited and released Thursday after police charged her with scamming a local grocery store out of more than $1,000 over six weeks.

Iris Jovel de Hernandez, 24, of Marshalltown, allegedly stole baby formula and Nicoderm patches and began returning them for cash at Hy-Vee, said Capt. Mike Hanken, with the Marshalltown Police Department.

The police report lists the total of the items stolen at $1,050.

Jovel de Hernandez is charged with second-degree theft, a Class D felony. Her initial appearance is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Feb. 19.

Sara Harmsen, of Garwin, is the parent of a daughter, Elnorah Jane Harmsen, born at 1:51 p.m. on Feb. 5, at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center weighing 8 pounds and measuring 20 inches in length. Welcoming Elnorah home is big brother Jacob Harmsen. Grandparents are John and Rita Harmsen.

Amanda Rose Harwell, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge. She pleaded guilty and was fined $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, due immediately. A warrant for failure to appear on the charge on Feb. 6 had been issued and a bond of $300 was paid. The bond was condemned to pay the fine and the remainder $97.50 is due immediately.

Kendra D. Walker, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a theft-third degree charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle her case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Feb. 25. Bond is set at $2,000 cash or surety.

Bill Gayetay, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a failure to have a valid driver's license charge. The charge was amended to an expired driver's license charge. He pleaded guilty to the amended charge and was fined $50 with a $17.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $127.50, due immediately.

Jesus Lopez, 1512 Fremont St., made an initial appearance on a providing alcohol to people under the legal age charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $100 with a $35 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $195, due immediately.

Melissa Rose Harris, of Eldora, made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge, a driving while revoked charge and a no insurance charge. On the driving while revoked charge the public defender's office was appointed to handle her case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on March 7. The driving under suspension case will continue with the driving while revoked case. The no insurance charge was dismissed with court costs of $60, due immediately, when proof of insurance was supplied to the court.

Gary Vanness, 1510 W. Main St., made an initial appearance on a prohibited acts charge and a possession of drug paraphernalia charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his cases. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on March 7.

Josephine Armas Duarte, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a violation of instruction permit charge, an operating without registration charge and a no insurance charge. On the violation of instruction permit charge she pleaded guilty and was fined $50 with a $17.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $127.50, due immediately. The operation without registration charge was dismissed when proof of registration was submitted. Court costs of $60 were assessed, due immediately. The no insurance charge was dismissed with proof of insurance was shown. Court costs of $60 was assessed, due immediately.

Bobbi Roberts, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a dog at large-second offense charge. She pleaded guilty and was fined $100 with a $35 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $195, due immediately.

On Tuesday, Barbara Jeane Wilder, 408 Swayze St., reported the theft of a RCA 42 inch flatscreen TV and a Panasonic 36 inch flatscreen TV from her residence. Estimated value of loss was $600.

On Monday, Katherine Lucille Snider, 201 N. 19th St., reported the theft of a Compaq Presario laptop computer from her residence. Estimated value of loss was $300.

On Sunday, Courtney Leeper, 108 Washington St., reported the theft of cash in the amount of $101.

On Thursday, an employee with Hays Construction, 16 S. 18th Ave., reported the theft of 400 feet of flex welding cable and copper connectors from the business. Estimated value of loss was $1,884.

On Wednesday, Mary Vis-Fulster, of Gladbrook, reported the theft of a purse and contents while at Walmart. Estimated value of loss was $140.
