The campaign to raise funds for a new fire station in Haverhill is off to a good start, but town leaders aren't letting up just yet. A total of $40,000 has been raised through donations and a special event is coming next month looking to add to that total.

The Haverhill Social Club will host a fundraising dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. on March 2 for the cost of a free will donation to the new fire station.

The meal will feature Rocky Mountain oysters (bull testicles), liver, heart, tongue and assorted side. Maid-Rite sandwiches will be available for the less adventurous crowd.

Barry and Emily Ewoldt, owners of the social club, have been supportive of the new fire station project and are willing to lend the use of their facility for this event. Haverhill councilman Matt Stalzer has been happy with the response so far during the fundraising project and looks forward to this event.

"There's been a lot of interest in the community supporting the new fire station," Stalzer said.

The group isn't stopping there as they have also scheduled a street dance in Haverhill on June 22 which will feature the popular local band Loose Neutral.

Fact Box

If you go ...

WHAT: Fundraising dinner for new fire station

WHEN: March 2, 5 to 9 p.m.

WHERE: Haverhill Social Club

"This fundraising will be a ongoing process until we meet our goal of $300,000," Stalzer said.

The need for a new fire station comes from the current building showing signs of wear combined with the fact it is too small to fill the volunteer department's needs.
