Man attacks woman, steals her car

A man is behind bars after attacking a woman and then stealing her vehicle.

Police Department said the incident occurred at about 10 p.m. Monday when Jose Vazquez- Medina, 26, showed up at an acquaintance's apartment and demanded the keys to her car.

When she refused to give him the keys, he attacked her by attempting to strangle her, according to court records.

After the assault, the victim gave him her keys and he left in the vehicle. Vazquez-Medina, of St. Paul, Minn., returned to the apartment on North Second Street when police officers were conducting their investigation. He was subsequently charged. An ambulance was called for the victim, but she declined treatment.

Vazquez-Medina is charged with first-degree burglary, a Class B felony, punishable up to 25 years in prison and operating a vehicle without owner's consent, an aggravated misdemeanor, punishable up to two years in jail and a fine of at least $625.

He made his initial court appearance Tuesday and is being held at the Marshall County Jail on a $25,000 cash-only bond. a no contact order was issued for he the victim and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 1.
