Carl D. Swearingen, 86, of Melbourne, IA passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013, at the Israel Family Hospice House, in Ames with his family by his side. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at the Main St. Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes, in Marshalltown. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at the Main St. Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes. Interment will be at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, in Marshalltown. Carl was born July 12, 1926 to Charles and Jessie (Cooper) Swearingen in Marshalltown. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1945. He served in country in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the Destroyer Escort USS Earl V. Johnson DE 702. Carl was united in marriage to Emily Lou Johnson on March 3, 1951. Carl owned and operated H.A. Peterson Co. in Marshalltown and HAPCO in Goldfield, IA. He enjoyed camping and traveling with his friends and family. He also enjoyed dogs, hunting, gun collecting, and computers. He loved spending time outdoors; sitting, walking, and exploring.
Carl will be missed by a daughter, Sue (Jeff) Dillman, a son, Kirk Swearingen, three grandchildren, Jenny (Jason) Wilson, Jessie (Bob) Border, Josh (Nikki) Dillman, four great grandchildren, Ava, Colin, Taylor, Jadon, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, his parents, a brother, Jack Swearingen, and a sister, Lois Bryan.
