Since opening Lohry's Pooch Academy dog training business in the Des Moines area several years ago, Jessica Lohry of Johnston has learned what dogs, and their owners, lack.
And that is an upscale canine daycamp, lodging, grooming and training business in one setting conveniently located in the metro area.
Lohry went to work, arranged financing, named it Dogwoods Lodge and broke ground in August.
Proprietor Jessica Lohry of Johnston is shown at her Dogwoods Lodge facility in Grimes Wednesday. The lodge will offer an upscale daycamp, grooming, lodging and training for canines.
The 11,000-square-foot building is at 2960 S.E. Grimes Blvd. in Grimes north of Interstate 80 and off Iowa Highway 141. Featured on the more than two-acre site are indoor/outdoor suites, heated floors, mud-free outdoor play areas, a no-slip indoor play area and a salon-style grooming area.
Pet owners can select between cabins with custom raised beds, or chalets featuring plush bedding, handmade wood feeders, large windows and glass doors.
Pooch Academy will move in the new building once its complete.
The academy specializes in multiple ways of teaching new skills.
"No one method works for every dog, owner or behavior issue," said Lohry. "This is where we excel over the competition, we find the method which works best for each dog and owner."
Setting the lodge apart from other businesses will be certified staff.
"Jessica believes in extensive training for staff," said Joe Cassis, director of operations.
"This is the culmination of four years of planning, so it is exciting to finally see physical evidence of our work," Lohry said. "Dogwoods will provide all high-end services. This will be the premium center for dogs and their owners."
Lohry said she is estimating a March 31 opening.
Cassis said the March 31 date would serve as a "soft opening," and a grand opening will be held in April or May.
