Area tracksters compete in Iowa State Indoor

AMES - A handful of area girls' track and field teams opened up the season Monday at the ISU High School Girls Classic Indoor Invitational at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center.

South Tama County was impressive in a few field events.

Samantha Holz took 10th in the shot put with a toss of 34 feet, 5 inches, while Shelby Bradley was 13th in the long jump following a leap of 14-10 1/4. Two Trojans also placed in the top 16 in the high jump as senior Jade Rohach and freshman Maddie Bacon finished in a nine-way tie for 16th. Both jumpers scored a best jump of 4-8.

Marshalltown also took part in its first indoor meet of the season.

Finishing near the top 10 was the sprint medley team of Chione Brooks, Tabby Steffensen, Cassidy Blackford and Eisha Oden. That foursome finished the race in 12th place with a time of 1 minute, 59 seconds.

Sophomore Rachel Blagg will be one of the team's top distance runners this season and she grabbed a 17th place finish in the 1,500-meter run. Blagg hit the line in 5:22.66.

The Bobcat 4x400-meter relay team was 19th overall and the 4x800 relay squad ended up 20th.

The 4x400-meter relay foursome included Saryn Case, Sabrina Daugherty, Blagg and Oden and that group hit the line in 4:29.30. The 4x800-meter relay team included Blagg, Michaela Huey, Wynn Tan and Kari Smith. That group finished in 10:46.80.

The Bobcats will next run at the Central College Indoor Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday. The first outdoor meet of the season will be Thursday, March 28, at the Boone Invitational. Action begins at 5 p.m.

South Tama County will compete in the Northern Iowa Indoor Invitational on Thursday, March 21, and then will begin the outdoor season at home Tuesday, April 2. The Trojans will host a co-ed meet that features Gladbrook-Reinbeck, BCLUW, East Marshall, GMG, Benton Community, Newton, Columbus Catholic and Knoxville. It kicks off with field events at 5 p.m.
