Local man charged with felony assault

A Marshalltown man faces a felony assault charge after allegedly threatening his live-in girlfriend.

Dolphus Coleman, 47, cornered the victim in the bedroom and held his hand to the woman's face in a threatening manner that seemed to indicate he intended to slam her face against the wall at the couple's home Sunday morning, said Capt. Mike Hanken, with the Marshalltown Police Department.

According to the police report, the woman managed to convince Coleman to leave the room and locked the door. When police arrived, they found her holed up in the room with a machete.

The victim did not need medical attention since Coleman never physically battered her; he just left her in reasonable fear of physical harm, Hanken said.

Police charged Coleman with domestic assault, a Class D felony. The charge is enhanced due to prior convictions. His bond is set $5,000. The court issued a no-contact order.
