Marshall County will pay $337,954 for its annual rock letting for gravel roads in the county this year.

Four bids for four different zones of the county were approved by the board of supervisors during a meeting Tuesday. Three of the bids approved were from Rausch Brothers Trucking of Ionia, and the other bid approved was from Stratford Gravel of Dayton.

County Engineer Paul Geilendfeldt said the bids came in below his original estimate.

Marshall County will pay $337,954 for the annual rock resurfacing on rural roads after bids were approved during a board of supervisors meeting Tuesday.

"We're feeling alright about the prices," he said.

Five companies bid on the project with some choosing to provide the rock and hauling and some bidding to haul and place the rock on the roads only.

In other action, the board approved the hire of Kyle Kirk as a collections assistant in the county attorney's office. Kirk will assist Dane Zuercher with the collection of delinquent court debt and be paid an annual salary of $30,000.

The board approved the use of the courthouse grounds for Child Abuse Prevention Services to hold its annual Stand Up for Children event on April 26. The rally will be held from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month.

In a separate meeting held Tuesday afternoon, the supervisors approved the appointment of Dr. Leah Bethel as the deputy county medical examiner for a 1-year term.

She would be available to handle death certificates if her father-in-law and medical examiner, Dr. David Bethel, was unavailable. Leah's husband, Mark Bethel, serves as the assistant medical examiner but is not a doctor, so he can't issue death certificates.
