East Marshall High School Principal Rex Kozak has been named a finalist for the 2013 Iowa Secondary Principal of the Year award from the School Administrators of Iowa.

Kozak has been principal at East Marshall in Le Grand since 2004 and has previous principal experience at IKM and Spalding Catholic in Granville.

"I think it's an honor," Kozak said. "It says a lot about the staff at East Marshall and the community at East Marshall. It's reflective of all the hard work of so many people."

Kozak will be honored at the SAI annual conference in August in Des Moines along with the principal of the year, Trent Grundmeyer of Indianola. Kozak said the award is a result of the position the school district has in regards to student achievement.

"We have the ability to help students find success in different areas," Kozak said.

Kozak was nominated by his peer school administrators in the state and credited the support of the district and staff for the award. East Marshall Schools Superintendent Dianne Anderson said in her first year in the district she has noticed that Kozak has the ability to see the right path to the future for his students and encourages them to extend their learning beyond high school.

Anderson said Kozak is present at seemingly every activity and works hard to be very involved in the school.

"He has a passion for the kids and what's best for the students," Anderson said.
