Leon Allen Sommerlot, 78 of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 7, 2013, from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. The memorial service will be held on Monday, April 8, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. also at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. After the service there will be a luncheon and then burial at Bethel Grove Cemetery in Liscomb. Memorials may be directed towards the family. Leon Sommerlot was born on November 7, 1934, in Albion, Iowa to Merl and Margaret Harper Sommerlot. He graduated from Albion High School in 1952. On June 17, 1956 Leon was united in marriage to Sharon Olson at Central Christian Church in Marshalltown. Leon enlisted in the United States Army in May of 1957 and was an active member for six months. After active duty; Leon continued as a Reserve for 5 years. After the Army; Leon was a farmer north of Albion, Iowa and later worked for the Times Republican. Leon and Sharon resided in the Albion area for about 25 years before calling Marshalltown home in June of 1998. Leon loved to watch his birds and squirrels and even made squirrel feeders for them. He also enjoyed tinkering in the garage and building things.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 56 years, Sharon; children: Michael (Raelene) of Marshalltown and Mark (Rosemary) of Marshalltown; grandchildren: Matthew, Melissa, Charol, Christina, Michael and Mark; ten great grandchildren; brother: Richard (Ramona) from Union, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved dog "Sparky".
Leon is preceded in death by both of his parents; brothers: Dale, Wilfred, Robert, Keith and Max.
