DIKE - Ellen Swartz was the lone winner in the South Hardin girls' tennis team's first showing of the season Thursday.
Swartz won her season opener 8-4 but the Tigers dropped an 8-1 decision to Dike-New Hartford on the road. It was the first match of the season for South Hardin.
"Nice showing by the team, but we have lots of areas for improvement," South Hardin coach Scott Swartz said. "We looked rusty in competitive situations."
Ellen Swartz controlled her match from the start as she jumped out to a 4-1 lead and never looked back.
Besides that, the closest matches on the night for the Tigers came at No. 6 singles where Shannon Teske lost 8-4 to Tessa Dall and Ellen Swartz and Hannah Reifschneider lost 8-5 in doubles action.
"We looked like we haven't had much time to practice doubles let alone with these specific partners," Coach Swartz said. "We will improve as the season goes on."
South Hardin will next play at Union Community on Tuesday. Action begins at 4:15 p.m. in La Porte City.
