TRAER - GMG junior Chad Plaehn claimed medalist honors with a 2-over-par round of 37, but the Wolverines were edged 185-186 by North Tama in Thursday's Iowa Star Conference boys' golf dual meet at Traer Country Club.
Plaehn, who last spring qualified for the Class 1A state golf tournament, was medalist by five strokes. North Tama's Taylor Dinsdale, the only remaining member of the Redhawks' 2011 state qualifying team, was runner-up with a 42.
Dinsdale and Hunter Danker both shot 42 to lead North Tama. Jakeb Cochran shot 47 and Brandon Kaufman 47 to round out the Redhawks' scoring.
GMG got a 49 from Kenan Hall and a pair of 50s from Austin Vaughn and Luke Petty.
North Tama's girls shot 224 led by Haley Lunde's 54, which was good for runner-up medalist. GMG's Shannon Fleming, one of only two Wolverine golfers, was medalist on a cardback with her 54.
Behind Lunde for North Tama was Nicole Jones and Courtney Heckt with rounds of 56, and Jayde Vogeler's 58.
Lexie Dubberke shot 60 for GMG.
West Marshall girls hit the links
NEVADA - West Marshall sent three girls' golfers to the course for its season opener, a triangular with North Polk Thursday at Nevada.
The host Cubs won with a 216 team score to North Polk's 227, led by medalist Christine Ausman's 48 on the par-35 Indian Creek Country Club course.
North Polk was paced by Megan Petersen's runner-up 49.
Shayla Moler shot 59 for West Marshall, while Kenadey Porter and Clair Underwood both carded 60.
