SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat girls 10th at J-Hawk Relays

CEDAR RAPIDS - The Marshalltown girls' track and field team came away with 10 points and 10th place out of 14 teams at Cedar Rapids Jefferson's J-Hawk Relays on Saturday.

A bulk of the Bobcats' points came from Eisha Oden, who won the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.97 seconds. Hers was the only MHS finish inside the top seven.

Oden also posted her personal-best time of 13.09 to finish ninth in the 100.

Marshalltown's sprint medley relay team of Chione Brooks, Karli McClure, Jasmine Scott and Sabrina Daugherty collected eighth place (2:03.88). Rachel Blagg came in ninth in the 800 (2:35.50) and was 10th in the 3,000 (11:40).

Leading the field events was Maddison Wignall, who posted 10th with her season-best throw of 93 feet, 4 inches in the discus.

The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday at the Little Cyclone Invitational hosted by Ames.

Wolverines score 3 silvers at Meskwaki

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT - The GMG boys' track and field team posted 17 placewinning performances at the Meskwaki Warrior Invitational on Friday.

First place managed to elude the Wolverines all night, but GMG did garner three runner-up performances. Two of them came from Brock Fisher, who scored second in both the 100- and 200-meter sprints. The other came from the 4x200 relay team of Brandon Weitzell, Devon Schuett, Colin Crumrine and Bryce Newcomb in a combined time of 1 minute, 44.60 seconds.

The foursome of Dillon Slingluff, Lansana Mohr, Newcomb and Austin Vaughn got bronze in the 4x100 (48.79), while Slingluff, Vaughn, Schuett and Tyler Krull took third in the 1,600 medley (4:12.86).

Matt Smith scored third in the 3,200 (12:16.17). Off the track, Fisher picked up third in the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches), and Gage Fraser earned bronze in the shot put (39-1/2).

The Wolverines host their only meet of the season tonight in Tama with the 5 p.m. running of the GMG Relays. Area teams BCLUW, East Marshall and North Tama are scheduled to compete in the event.
