ANKENY - One event victory emerged as the highlight performance for the Marshalltown boys' track and field team at Tuesday's Fred Smith Relays hosted by Ankeny.
Bobcat senior Tad Steffensen scored a bulk of his team's points with his first-place finish in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at 11.46 seconds for one of only two top-four results for MHS.
The Bobcats placed seventh out of eight teams with 21 points, just holding off Des Moines Lincoln (20). Waukee was the overwhelming team champion with 134 points, followed by Ankeny (80), Dowling Catholic (76), Ames (70), Des Moines Roosevelt (67) and Southeast Polk (52).
Steffensen also anchored Marshalltown's 4x100 relay to third place. The quartet of Brandon Pettigrew, Dacoda Ewalt, Colton Fuller and Steffensen timed in at 45.34 in their bronze medal performance.
The Bobcats' shuttle hurdle relay team of Marco Tapia, Kolby Keeler, Jordan Paone and Paul Landherr earned fifth for their time of 1:02.68.
Sixth-place finishes went to Daniel Talbert in the 3,200 (10:31.30), the 4x200 (Pettigrew, Ewalt, De'Quan McDowell and Steffensen; 1:35.03) and the 4x400 (Keeler, Aaron Hauser, Tapia, McDowell; 3:42.70).
Pedro Gomez got seventh place in both throwing events, heaving the discus 120 feet, 11 inches, and the shot put 43 feet.
Eighth-place results went to Dacoda Ewalt in the long jump, Sam Johnson in the 400, Keeler in the 110 high hurdles, and the 4x800 foursome of Zach Wells, Johnson, Hunter Barnard and Trae Peterson.
The Bobcats are scheduled to compete again Thursday at Newton.
