Shirley Maxwell Cox, 83, passed away Friday, April 12, 2013. Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 20 at 10 a.m., at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn's Chapel in Des Moines, with family present. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Shirley was born February 14, 1930 and raised in Marshalltown, before settling in Des Moines. She graduated from Marshalltown High School and attended Central Iowa Business College. She worked for the state in various areas including the Cataloging Department for the Iowa State Traveling Library. In 1978, she was hired by Des Moines Public Schools as a cafeteria worker and retired as Food Service Coordinator. After retiring, Shirley was active with the Metro Kids, program. She was a favorite with the children at the schools where she assisted in volunteer programs. She loved gardening, listening to jazz music, reading and visiting with friends. She enjoyed attending services at Highland Park Lutheran Church.
Shirley is survived by her children, Lisa, of Arlington, VA; Dena, of West Des Moines; and Kenneth, of Urbandale; her sister, Margaret Beavers, of Los Angeles, CA; her brother, Roger Maxwell, of Windsor Heights; and many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, the Reverend Artice and Margaret Maxwell; her brothers, Robert and Ralph; and her sister, Harriett.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Shirley's name to the American Heart Association.
