Bigotry, hate, fear lives on

April 21, 2013
William Tempelmeyer, Marshalltown , Times-Republican

One of the things I've found interesting during my 82 years on this planet has been the perpetual use of the word "no." The favorite word of all 2-year-olds. Have you ever heard of the "Know Nothing Party"?

The Know Nothing Party was a political faction of the 1850s, characterized by fear of foreigners. It was empowered by popular fears that the country was being overwhelmed by Germans and Irish Catholic immigrants, who were often regarded as hostile to Republican values and controlled by the Pope in Rome.

Mainly active from 1854 to 1856, it strove to curb immigration and naturalization. Membership was limited to white, protestant males. Henry David Thoreau, (1817 1862), an American author, poet, and philosopher, once said "there is no new news, just old news with new dates."

Looks like some things never change. Don't despair it only took 160 years to overcome this bigotry, hate and fear. Maybe in another 500 years we can stamp out ignorance, superstition and hate. Sorry I won't be here to see it happen. I just wish I could have waited and been born after the end of the Dark Ages. Help is on the way, but not soon enough.
