A woman driving from western Iowa to the University of Northern Iowa rolled her car along Highway 20 late Monday night, killing her.

The Grundy County Medical Examiner pronounced Kelby Klein, 21, of Le Mars, dead at the scene near mile marker 187, approximately three miles northwest of Wellsburg just before 2:30 a.m.

Grundy County Sheriff Rick Penning said deputies began looking for Klein after a concerned party called in a missing person report just before noon Monday after Klein didn't arrive at the university on schedule.

Penning said Klein was driving east when she attempted to correct her Ford Escape to prevent it from veering from the road to the left, sending the car into a ditch on the opposite side.

"It hits a rock shoulder," Penning said of the road. "It is normal human instinct to go to the right."

Klein lost control and drove the car into the ditch, smashing through a fence and barrel rolling the car, Penning said. The investigation will continue, but Penning said there is no reason to believe alcohol was involved, and whether Klein was wearing her seatbelt is still unknown.

Although there was light rain, there was no obvious hazards that would have caused the crash, he added.

The crash totaled the car.

Wellsburg Fire Department and Ambulance assisted the sheriff's office at the scene.
