TAMA - On the brink of something great, simply good was more than enough for the Grundy Center girls golf team Tuesday.

Led by four sub-50 scores, the Spartans won the South Tama County Triangular with a score of 186.

STC was 20 strokes back in second and Gladbrook-Reinbeck finished third at 237. The Trojans' Paige Van Dyk fired a 4-over-par 40 to earn medalist honors, while Grundy Center's Josie McMartin carded a 43 for runner-up.

"We are so close to popping a really good score," Grundy Center coach Rick Schupbach said. "We had a real chance tonight, but some big numbers by all the girls kept us in the mid-180s.

Lindsay Freeman tallied a 45 and Hillary Samo and Baylie Wrage each shot 49s to complete the Spartans team score.

"Josie has been really steady this year and she is figuring out how to score when not hitting the ball well, which is critical to saving rounds," Schupbach said. "Lindsay had the round of her career going until a couple of three putts and then taking a 9 on a hole.

"I know the girls are about ready to break through if they can focus on each shot at hand. Our best is yet to come."

The Trojans' scoring contingent also featured Carrie Cibula (48), Laurel Scharnweber (54) and Elysiana Gonzalez (58).

Erin Wentzien's 52 paced the Rebels as Taylor Flamme (58), Callie Kuehl (63) and Rebecca Franksain (64) also chipped in for G-R.

STC boys golf at Tama

TAMA - Elliot Eggleston held on for the medalist honors and the Grundy Center boys golf team came away with a victory at the South Tama County Triangular Tuesday at Tama-Toledo Country Club.

Eggleston edged STC's Kolton Smith with a card-back handicap hole as each fired a two-over-par 38. Grundy Center totaled a score of 166 to hold off Gladbrook-Reinbeck by nine strokes, while the Trojans took third (183).

Ryon Appel and Sam Thompson followed with 42s for the Spartans, while Lane Bangasser and Nick Saack both tallied a 44.

Jacob Smoldt's 41 paced the Rebels, while Bryce Ehlers added a 42. Logan Koester and Cameron Murphy each carded 46.

Along with Smith, STC's scoring quartet featured Colson Frakes (43), Ian Slagle (50) and Taylen Anderson (51).

The Rebels compete at Jesup Thursday at 4:15 p.m., while the Spartans host Denver at Town & Country Golf Course at the same time. The Trojans host the South Tama Invitational at Tama-Toledo Country Club Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
