Commandant should be placed on leave

May 19, 2013
Janice Laue, Iowa Alliance for Retired Americans, Urbandale , Times-Republican

The allegations of harassment and bullying by the commandant of the Iowa Veterans Home are profoundly disturbing. Given the sacrifices made by our state's veterans, our veterans home should be a model for the nation. Our veterans deserve the very best care. The best care is simply not possible when residents and employees are walking on eggshells in fear of bullying by the commandant.

Veterans and spouses living at the Iowa Veterans Home deserve better than the climate of fear that was described at a recent Iowa Senate Veterans Affairs Committee hearing. The families of those veterans and spouses deserve peace of mind.

The Marshalltown Times-Republican and Sen. Steve Sodders have the right idea: the commandant should be placed on leave until a full and fair investigation can be completed.
