13th Street celebrates, looks toward the future

Celebration is June 15, fundraiser for part two underway

It's been more than five years since plans first unraveled to revitalize Marshalltown's 13th Street district, and with phase one of the construction complete, it's time to celebrate and start thinking about phase two.

From now until mid-June, the 13th Street Revitalization Committee is selling raffle tickets to help fund the second phase of construction. Committee members said they are hoping to collect $30,000 from this first of several fundraisers.

"We're always trying to come up with a new, fun idea, and this is something nobody has tried," said Jane Bauer, a member of the 13th Street Revitalization committee. "There's been lots of raffles, but not quite a raffle of this magnitude."

Bauer said 300 tickets are being sold, each ticket costing $100, and there will be three winners for three different prizes. The prizes include $1,000 worth of food from area restaurants and grocery stores, a custom-made area rug worth $1,000 and a golf package to premier golf courses around central Iowa.

"We want to raise at least $200,000 to complete what's going on down here," she said.

Phase two of the revitalization project will include aesthetic features including light poles, benches, garbage cans and landscaping.

Winners of the prizes will be announced at the "13th Street Scrambler" celebration, which is set to take place June 15.

Fauna Nord, a revitalization committee member, said the scrambler is a breakfast event and, it aims to bring people to 13th Street to celebrate phase one.

"It's to come see what has been accomplished so far," Nord said.

From 9 to 11 a.m. there will be $3 breakfast specials at 13th Street Inn and Morning Glory Bakery, $3 bloody marys at The Spot, 13 cent paperback books and children's clothes at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, a live chalk art demonstration by artist Missy Sharer, a Jean Seberg tribute and a public art presentation by artist Tom Stancliffe, Nord said.

"We're celebrating because we have taken an area that was in shambles, and between the city and the people, we've brought it back to life," she said.

As for the raffle, Bauer said they haven't quite sold half the tickets, but is optimistic they will collect the goal of $30,000.

"Anything to help the future of our community, to better the community, we won't give up," she said.
