HUDSON - Closing the day with a convincing 12-1 win over the host Pirates, the South Tama County softball team salvaged a 1-2 mark at the Hudson Tournament on Saturday.

Jade Rohach drove in three runs, while Riley Craun and Tori Appelgate each tallied three hits on the day. Samantha Holtz picked up the win from the circle as STC improved to 3-4.

A two-run homer for South Hamilton proved to be just enough as the Hawks edged the Trojans 2-1 in their second game of the day. Freshman Kallie Hala was solid in the circle allowing just four hits, though the Trojans managed just a single run in the fourth.

Denver jumped all over the Trojans in Saturday's opener with a 12-3 rout as Holtz was on the losing end of the decision.

Holtz and Hala combined for a winning pitching effort Friday as Appelgate's walk-off, two-run single sent the host Trojans to a 7-6 triumph over Grundy Center.

With two outs against them, Madison Baack reached base on an error before consecutive singles from Belle Tyynismaa and Craun set up Appelgate's heroics. Tyynismaa had three hits, while Appelgate and Craun each tallied two.

The Trojans led 5-0 entering the sixth before the Spartans ran up six runs in their second to last at-bat. Hala earned the win throwing 1 1/3 inning of relief and giving up just one run after coming in with the bases loaded. Hala struck out four, while Holtz threw 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision.

The Trojans (3-4, 1-1) have a demanding week ahead starting with a home contest against Class 2A No. 11-ranked BCLUW Monday and a road trip to Class 3A No. 4 East Marshall Tuesday. STC continues the road trek Wednesday against Class 2A No. 13 AGWSR and Thursday with Gladbrook-Reinbeck. The Trojans cap the stretch Saturday at the Vinton-Shellsburg Tournament.

The Spartans face the Rebels on the road Monday, before hosting South Hardin Tuesday. Grundy Center heads to AGWSR Thursday and will compete in the Nashua-Plainfield Tournament Saturday.
