ANKENY - The pairing of Marshalltown's top two singles tennis players turned out to be a pretty lethal duo.

Seniors Rachel Faircloth and Ryan Shomo took third place in the Class 2A State Co-Ed Tennis Tournament on Tuesday, winning five times while suffering just a semifinal loss to a pair of rivals from Ames.

The Bobcat pair won their opener in straight sets over Dubuque Senior's Ashton Stoppelmoor and Gabe Mozena, 6-2, 6-3, and then held off Sophie Mallaro and Brennan Ashwood in the round of 32, 7-6 (5) 7-6 (1).

The Bobcat pair overcame a rally from West Des Moines Valley's Jenni Aldrich and Anders Jensen to prevail 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (8) to reach the quarterfinals, and it was a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (8) triumph over Iowa City West's Elena Wilson and Kenny Goins that got the MHS duo into the semifinals.

There they ran into Ames' Judith Fan and Alex Huang, who won a 6-1, 6-1 match.

Fan placed seventh in 2A singles, while Huang placed third on the boys' side. Shomo was a sixth-place finisher for the Bobcats.

In the consolation finals, Shomo and Faircloth took a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (3) contest over Clinton's Griffin Rasche and Jacob Kruse to claim third place.

Valley's Lucy Korsakov and Ryan Peterson defeated Fan and Huang of Ames, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8) to take the 2A title.

Marshalltown's other state co-ed pairing of Megan Riemenschneider and Kade Vopava was defeated in its play-in match, 6-0, 6-1, by Iowa City West's Erin Weathers and Will Code.

The Class 1A championship was claimed by Red Oak's Kate and Pete Walker after they defeated Boone's Kelli Greiner and Chad Moklestad, 6-2, 6-3, in the finals.
