A fire early Monday morning displaced the residents of a local apartment building.

The Marshalltown Fire Department was on scene at 304 Plaza Heights Road for roughly two hours just after midnight, said Marshalltown Fire Marshal Deb Lundgren.

During the full response to the four-apartment building, firefighters deployed a pre-connected hand line to extinguish a fire that originated in the ceiling of the southwest apartment, Lundgren said.

"It was pretty much limited to that unit and basically the hall and bathroom," she said.

Firefighters contained the fire to the apartment where it originated, and everyone living in the building managed to escape by the time firefighters had arrived, Lundgren said. She said she is unaware whether all the occupants were home at the time of the fire. One of the apartments is vacant.

The fire department estimates the damage to the building at $10,000. No injuries were reported.

The Red Cross helped relocate displaced tenants until the investigation, which Lundgren said will continue, is complete.

Kara Kelly, regional communications officer for the Red Cross, said the Red Cross assisted eight people with food and lodging as of Monday afternoon.

The Marshalltown Police Department and Area Paramedic Services assisted the fire department with the call.
