GILMAN - The East Marshall baseball team snapped a four-game skid by blanking Grundy Center, 7-0, in Tuesday's NICL West Division showdown.
Brock Pieters tossed a four-hit shutout for the host Mustangs (5-11, 4-2), who had been held scoreless a night earlier at Gladbrook-Reinbeck. Pieters (2-1) allowed four hits and four walks, striking out three for the win.
East Marshall backed him with just four hits of their own but took a 7-0 lead through five innings against Grundy Center hurler Ryon Appel. Appel struck out four and walked seven, allowing four earned runs on three hits for the loss.
Nate DeBondt and Ryan Puumala both went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI for East Marshall, while Nick Mommer and Josh Benzing were 1-for-3 with a run apiece.
Appel paced Grundy Center offensively, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Jordan Clapp and Bryce Moats added singles for the Spartans (1-4, 1-4), who have non-conference road games slated tonight at Denver and Thursday at North Tama.
East Marshall goes to South Hardin Friday for a 7 p.m. varsity-only contest.
Belle Plaine 10, North Tama 2
BELLE PLAINE - The North Tama baseball team saw its six-game winning streak end at the hands of Belle Plaine on Tuesday night, falling 10-2 in a non-conference affair.
Dalton Hulme took the loss on the mound for the Redhawks, allowing six runs - only two earned - over three innings. He allowed four hits, four total walks and two strikeouts. Cameron Hoeg and Clayton Blocker combined for the final three frames.
Brandon Kaufman led North Tama at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Five other players had a hit for the Redhawks, who host Dunkerton tonight in Iowa Star Conference play.
