CONRAD - Collecting 29 hits and playing perfect defensively, the Class 2A No. 8 BCLUW softball team swept a doubleheader with Grundy Center on Wednesday, winning the opener 16-0 in four innings and taking the nightcap 11-0 in six innings.
The Comets cranked out 20 hits in the first game, led by Mikayla Van Cleave's four singles and three runs scored. Kendall Scurr and Kayla Benjamin also had three hits apiece with both also recorded two RBIs. Sara Sharp, Sarah McCoy, Olivia Callaway, Mallory Vawter and Jessica deNeui all had two hits. Sharp also had four RBIs and scored three runs, while Vawter scored twice and Callaway added two RBis.
Callaway also earned the win in the circle, giving up one hit in four innings while walking one and striking out five.
Nicolette Simpson was the winner in game two. The junior hurler allowed three hits in her six innings and struck out nine while walking one.
The game was scoreless after two innings but the Comets (11-4 overall and 6-2 in NICL West Division play) scored two in the third and four each in the fifth and sixth innings.
Simpson also led the offense with three of the Comets' nine hits and she also had three RBIs. Vawter also had three hits, three runs and three stolen bases, while Van Cleave, Sharp, deNeui and Nicole Montgomery all collected two hits. McCoy was walked four times.
Grundy Center dropped to 2-8 overall and 2-6 in NICL West play after the losses.
BCLUW will next play at the Fort Dodge Invitational on Friday and Saturday, while Grundy Center travels to North Tama today for a non-conference affair.
South Hardin 4, Gladbrook-Reinbeck 1
ELDORA - Alaina Lake allowed an unearned run while striking out seven, helping South Hardin (4-4, 3-2) capture a 4-1 win over Gladbrook-Reinbeck in NICL West Division softball Tuesday.
Becky Mazurik, Kassidy Rewoldt, Kortney Crosser and Shannon Teske had two hits apiece for the Tigers, including a triple for Teske.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck (1-10, 0-5) scored its lone run in the top of the seventh. Taylor Street took the loss, allowing 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Chelsea Taylor drove in the Rebels' only run, plating Hayley Weber.
North Tama 13, Belle Plaine 3
BELLE PLAINE - North Tama scored in six of seven at-bats, pulling away for a 13-3 win in non-conference play Tuesday over Belle Plaine (3-10).
The Redhawks (10-2) won their fourth straight, tallying 17 hits in this one. Allie Zobel was 4-for-5 with a double, two runs, an RBI and three stolen bases. Sam Zobel was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Emma Knoop was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Whitney Pokorny and Courtney Stuart had two hits apiece.
Sarah Howard went 4 1/3 innings for the win, while Madison Howard tossed 2 2/3 scoreless frames of relief.
Benton 13, South Tama 0, 4 innings
TAMA - Amber Fiser hit a home run and tossed a no-hitter, striking out 10 as Benton Community improved to 14-1 with its ninth straight win - a 13-0, four-inning victory over South Tama (5-9) Tuesday night.
The Bobcats hit four home runs in the game. Benton clean-up hitter Alyssa Wiebel was 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs, while Taylor Busta was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Lea Brunssen finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.
