TRAER - North Tama overcame Grundy Center's comeback attempt to pick up a 12-8 win over the visiting Spartans in Thursday's non-conference baseball game.

Brandon Kaufman allowed only one earned run over his six innings as North Tama's starting pitcher, but four unearned runs got Grundy Center within 6-4 through four. The Redhawks' bats came back to life after scoring six times in the bottom of the first, getting four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to keep the Spartans at arm's reach.

Kaufman also finished 2-for-2 at the plate, scoring twice and driving in a run with a sacrifice fly. Dalton Hulme and Caden Stuart both went 2-for-4, including an RBI double for Hulme. Jacob Wrage's lone hit was an RBI double in the first inning.

Tyler Harken took the loss for Grundy Center, going three innings on the mound. Grant Weldon went 3-for-4 with a double while Austin Burroughs and Bryce Moats both added two hits for the Spartans.

Grundy Center plays an NICL West Division doubleheader against BCLUW tonight in Beaman, while North Tama resumes play with its three-team round-robin tournament on Saturday. The Redhawks (14-5) meet BCLUW at 10 a.m., the Comets square off with North Mahaska at noon, and North Tama and North Mahaska meet at 2 p.m.

The Spartans also compete on Saturday, taking on PCM in the 11 a.m. game of West Marshall's four-team Rose Festival Tournament in State Center.
