Bobcat freshmen swept by Tigers

WEST DES MOINES - West Des Moines Valley took a pair of cross-Central Iowa Conference baseball games from visiting Marshalltown on Wednesday, winning 11-1 in five innings and 10-5.

In the opener, Dayton Slifer, Paden Himes and Jordan Smiley had Marshalltown's three hits, and Mason Huntley scored the lone run. Devan Mann stole two bases. Spencer Dempewolf took the loss on the mound.

The Bobcats' five errors in game two caught up with them as eight of Valley's 10 runs came unearned to Slifer and Huntley.

Himes finished 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Cody Mead and Cole Keeler added singles. Dempewolf swiped two bases for the Bobcats (2-7).

MCC hosting summer volleyball camp

The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team and head coach Chris Brees will be hosting its 2013 Summer Volleyball Camp in July at the Student Activity Center on the MCC campus.

Athletes in grades 6-8 and 9-12 will both meet July 24-26. The younger group will go from 1-4 p.m., and the high schoolers will go from 8:30 a.m.-noon. An open gym from 6-8 p.m. will be open for all campers each day as well.

Each camp will focus on individual skill development with integration of team drills. Coach Brees will run the camp while being assisted by five NCAA Division I volleyball players in addition to current MCC Tigers.
