It's the season of garage sales. If you didn't know already, you must be living under a rock.
Signs touting these sales are everywhere lately and they seem to be bigger this year.
I saw a billboard-sized garage sale sign on Center Street a couple of weeks ago that advertised a "huge garage sale." If the size of the sign is indicative of the sale, then no doubt that was a big one.
There are so many signs out there I feel like we are back in election season.
For my mom's garage sales I would always tease her if they were even worth her trouble. My mom would bring out the same items that didn't sell for several years before for all of her sales. She would do all this work and only net like $20 or $30. Doesn't seem worth it.
I felt bad for those people who would show up 15 minutes before we opened the garage door only to find an old Hardee's Moose cup for 25 cents or a minuscule, barely watch-able black-and-white television for $10.
I remember I would always try to make some money during these sales too by selling lemonade or baseball cards. I didn't exactly get rich selling either of those, but it was fun to socialize with the neighbors and pretend to be a salesman for a Saturday morning.
I haven't been to a garage sale this year yet, but I need to go to see what's out there. Sometimes I can pick up some pretty sweet records. Yes, I still listen to records. For those teenagers out there, records were something your parents listened to when they were teenagers.
I figured out when I was a kid, one of the best times to get a good garage sale deal is right at the end of the sale. The people do not want to pack up the same items they didn't want to begin with and are willing to make deals.
I was able to get a camera originally priced at the sale at $4 for the low, low price of 50 cents. It was one of the those cameras in the 1980s shaped like a pen box and I was on cloud nine. Patience and timing can be key to garage sale shopping.
So, I guess we'll follow the signs (and the advertisements in the T-R - plug, plug) to a summer full of good deals this year.
