FAMILY LIFE

Family: The late Mildred Grimes was my mother and my father is Leonard Grimes, who resides in Marshalltown. Martha, Roger and Kyle are siblings. My husband, Paul, and I have three children: Burgess, Barrett and Heidi. Barrett is married to Kanlaya Jintanakul Barr, a native of Thailand. She has enriched our lives!

Pets: Only my husband! He has horses but I am allergic to them, so I try not to spend too much time up close and personal. This also gets me out of doing a lot of laundry.

Hobbies and interests: I love spending time with family and friends.

WORK

Occupation: I volunteer, supporting many worthwhile community programs and initiatives.

What that means: I love projects that improve people's lives or add value to life for all. For instance, I collect musical instruments for children whose families could not afford to purchase them. My current undertaking is the 13th annual Grimes Farm Run ... A Walk in the Park. Scheduled are a 1.6-mile Fun Run, a 5K Run/Walk and, weather permitting, an 8+K Rugged Run Walk, all at 8 a.m. July 13. Prizes awarded for 5K and 8+K first and second place winners. All registration revenue supports the farm's ongoing conservation and preservation initiatives. Visit grimesfarm.com, for more information.

Tenure: Not long enough to complete what I would like.

If I could change jobs I would be a/do: An Olympic gold medal gymnast.

FAVORITES

Book: "The Poor Will Be Glad" by Peter Greer and Phil Smith.

Movie: "Funny Girl" directed by Garson Kanin.

Foods: Anything Italian and vegetarian.

Sports: Marshalltown High School Bobcats, of course.

COMMUNITY

Best part of living here: Marshalltown has the friendliest, most caring people anywhere.

Most influential person: Miriam Wright Edelman

Local involvement: Marshalltown's First United Methodist Church, Marshalltown Youth Foundation (musical instrument lending library) and 100 Women Who Care.

Advice on life: Kindness matters.
